  1. International technology heavyweights have gathered in Ulsan, at the Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology for the grand opening of the UNIST Supercomputing Center. The two day workshop sponsored by the Korea Supercomputing Centers Alliance (KSCA) and hosted by the Korea Institute of Science and Technology Information (KISTI) and UNIST is one of the most important supercomputing events of 2010. The two day workshop held June 24th through to the 25th brought together leading researchers, developers, technology industry titans and government to share ideas, case results, and future development issues in the field of High Performance Supercomputing (HPC).

Participants included international technology behemoths: Cray Inc, Hewlett-Packard, IBM, Mellanox Technologies, Juniper Networks, Microsoft, Dell, and Intel. What differentiates this event from those past is the partnership between UNIST and its memorandum of understanding with KISTI to conduct joint research on critical research programs.

The UNIST Supercomputing Center will support the world’s most creative minds as they explore promising areas such as nanotechnology, renewable fuels, nuclear energy, technology management, biotechnology, and all engineering disciplines. The adaptive supercomputing and processing of large data volumes will allow researchers to investigate increasingly complex phenomena.

For instance, significant changes in radiative forces (Earth’s heat energy balance) have resulted from the build-up of greenhouse gases and trace constituents. The impacts on the planet of these anthropogenic induced changes to the energy budget have been detected and are projected to become increasingly more important during the next century. Computer models of the coupled atmosphere-land surface-ocean-sea ice system are essential scientific tools for understanding and predicting both natural and human induced changes in Earth’s climate. Our species fate and that of all others, depends on our will, foresight, moral courage and the best tools that science and technology can provide.
UNIST, with its High Performance Supercomputing capability and world leading scientists and researchers will be inching closer to: breakthroughs in energy conversion and storage, seismic data acquisition, genomic assembly and comparison, and a varied array of scientific and engineering projects that will improve quality of life for all. This will ensure that Korea will play its part in leading the global economy in opportunity and innovation for decades to come.
