Airspan Voluntarily Delist from NASDAQ

Yesterday (March 31th) Airspan has bombarded their investors with 8 SEC filings. Most important are the 10-k announcing earnings for 2008 and the notification of de-listing from NADSAQ.

It apperas that Airspan (NASDAQ: AIRN) has decided there is no point fighting the inevitable de-listing. On top of that Airspan management has given the following reasons:

  • the ongoing direct and indirect costs of public company compliance and the disproportionate impact of the foregoing costs on results of operations
  • the significant burden on Airspan’s management involved in the preparation of the Company’s public reports and compliance with accounting and other requirements of the Exchange Act;
  • the limited benefits to Airspan and its unaffiliated shareholders from the status as a “reporting company” in light of, among other things, the fact that the price of the common shares has been extremely low and the common shares have had limited liquidity in recent periods
  • the fact that due to market conditions, the low share price and low market capitalization Airspan is not currently in a position to use its public company status to issue meaningful amounts of equity securities or make acquisitions; and
  • Airspan’s belief that the number of shareholders of record is below 300.

Does it sound like a “Game Over? I have still many friends working there, so I hope this is not the case.

Airspan Yahoo message board has comments from some (300 or less) disgrunted investors who complain about the strange reasons given. It is evident that the company cannot avoid de-listing, and that should be the only reason. Saying that the management is burdened with the preparation of the public repots is not really a good one. Going public (IPO) is not just a way to get “easy money”; the money comes with a HUGE responsibility to the share holders; that should be the main focus of every CEO.

Highlights of the 10-k:

  1. Revenues for 2008 are $70,351,000 – worst in the last few years (10-k presents the results from 2004). Comparing to the previous 10-Q of $56,339,000 -> 4th Q revenues were $14,000,000 (lower than Q3).
  2. Loss from operations: $49,698,000. Compared to 10Q $27,329,000 -> Did Airspan lose $22,000,000 in Q4?

Decided to stop my analysis here, it was just too depressing.

OKI WiMAX/WiFi indoor unit

UQ Logo

UQ Communications has announced they will use new devices, the OKI USB device and WiFi combination.

Sound like a good idea, carry a USB device around to access the Wireless Broadband network, and when you arrive at home, plug it into the router and provide Internet access to different devices over WiFi.

What I don’t understand is:

  1. Link Budget. OKI claims the USB device is capable of +23dbm,which was also certified by the WiMAX Forum . I really doubt this USB device is capable of overcoming walls and windows to provide a reasonable experience.
  2. How come only Windows is supported for the USB device? I am sure the WiFi Router is not running Windows.

UQ Communications provided a press kit which includes the manuals and some wonderful images (attached below):

Nikkei reports on a new Alliance, the OESF (Open Embedded Software Foundation), to promote the usage of Android for Embedded devices of different kinds, from mobile phone to STB (SetTop Boxes), point of sale terminals and more.

The group consists of a long list of companies, among them: ARM, Fujitsu, Maxxon (for the complete list see here and here).

This is another important step for Android in Japan, as reported earlier in Asiajin , Fujitsu has already started offering Android related consulting services.

During the press conference, atmark , has demonstrated an atmark touch panel device running Android. (photo)

Alvarion's Internet Marketing

I was surprised a few days ago when Alvarion_Wimax started to follow me on twitter. It appears Alvarion has hired an Internet Marketing company to bring new ideas and methods to Alvarion’s traditional Marketing efforts.

With 7 updates, this is just the beginning, communicating with OM,  posting videos on youtube , what will follow?

From the youtube link, it is evident that Alvarion has hired Inclover to manage their web presence. I wonder how effective are these methods in the Wireless Broadband field. Anyway, I think it is a very good idea.

Airspan Earnings

I have just realized Airspan (NASDAQ: AIRN) have not released Q4 Earnings yet, with no published date for the Conference Call.

Odd, don’t you think?

Back online

I have been away from the Internet for the last 3 weeks as my family and I have relocated to Japan. Some errands (as well as internet connection) took longer than expected and still consume a lot of my time.

Japanese Boy Pad (???) Packing Material

Boy Pad

Think about Packing Material (Plastic bag filled with air), think about a good marketing name for it. What do you come up with?

Surprisingly enough, a Japanese company came up with the name “Boy Pad” (while originally in Japanese it is Boy Pat – ボーイパット).

The “Boy Pad” may serve more than one purpose. Once you are done packing and have a few plastic bags lying around, you can always pad your pants to attract attention.
